Woll and Wei (2019) argue that language learning may influence creativity because it requires learners to be able and willing to 'change', a point made by Landry (1974). Ghonsooly and Showqi (2012) comment that increased flexibility comes from the need to 'see the world through two different conceptual systems' (p. 162) when one learns another language.

It is not clear, however, in all the studies reviewed by Woll and Wei (2019) whether language learning 'caused' creativity, or whether individuals who are more creative in the first place are attracted to language learning. Nor are there really any details about what kinds of language learning experiences learners in the studies encountered in their classrooms.

It seems plausible that classroom language learning is more likely to benefit learners' creativity if it includes a number of key features.
