Student View

View as Student is a Canvas feature that allows you to observe what your students see in a Canvas course. It allows you to check that your course and all the content is displaying as it should, before you publish it to students. Remember to click Leave student view in order to return to your teacher or course administrator view.

  • Keep pages, images and modules unpublished until they are ready for students to view them.
  • Make sure you have published all the necessary content when you are ready to display it.
  • Use View as Student to check that students are able to see all necessary materials when they access your course.

To use the View as Student option, navigate to the course Home Page and select the View as Student icon (pair of spectacles) next to the Search box. This icon is also available in many other Canvas tools, such as Announcements, Discussions etc.

Note:

  • Inbox (Conversations), Collaborations, Groups, Sections, Peer reviews, and Profiles are not active functions in View as Student. That is, when using those features, you are able to view the course layout as seen by your students, but you cannot view student-specific information, such as conversations or section-specific activities.
  • View as Student works only within the specific course, that is, links to other courses will not preserve the student view. You would need to re-initiate View as Student in the destination course.
  • Bear in mind when using View as Student, your actions are tracked; therefore if you are testing activities such as quizzes and assignments, your progress will be stored. Hence, if you have done something such as edit a quiz, you should Reset the student view. This option is available within a box at the bottom of the screen within the student view window:

For an authentic student experience, it is advisable to request an alias (external) Canvas account from canvas@it.ox.ac.uk, and log in as that 'student' (in a different browser). Details on the information required are provided in the FAQ: "Is it possible to create a test account for me to try things out as a student?"
