Manage Courses – Edit course name, course code (and teaching data items)

Besides conducting the annual rollover of courses, the Manage Courses tool offers edit, delete (and restore) functionality. It is now possible for users with the LCC or Unit Admin role to edit the Name and Course code of courses within their subaccount. This means that you will no longer need to contact one of the Learning Technologists in the CTL to ask them to change these aspects of a Canvas course within your programme, department or college subaccount. Later, LCCs or Unit Admins will also be able to edit the teaching data items associated with the programme (or subject) course (section 2 below).

Please refer to our FAQ: What is the difference between the Name and Course code in a Canvas course?

Warning: Changing the course code may break the link to existing ORLO reading lists. The ORLO team is working on a fix for this issue (as at September 2024).

2. Edit Teaching Data Items

The central Canvas team is able to add / remove teaching data items associated with all types of courses in Canvas (regardless of how the course was originally created) – provided that there is corresponding data available in the Teaching Unit Management System. Licence holders can access the system, user manuals and training from the Teaching Unit Management System support page (it includes details about how to gain a licence to use the system).

The purpose of associating teaching data items with Canvas courses is to join up the data in both systems, so that benefits can be realised in future such as: (a) the ability to easily find courses within a ‘course index’; (b) auto-enrolment of students (who sign-up for teaching units) onto Canvas courses. Note that these enhancements are on the Canvas roadmap but have not yet been prioritised for implementation.

When editing Teaching Data Items, the items that are available to select depend on the subaccount location in which the course is being edited. Therefore, it is advisable to start in the subaccount in which the course is located, so that only the relevant teaching data items will be available to select from (i.e. other teaching data items in higher subaccounts will not be available for selection).

To edit the Teaching Data Items associated with a course:

  1. Access the Manage Courses tool as described at the top of this page.
  2. Alongside the relevant course, click on the Edit Teaching Data Items option within the three-dot menu.

  1. Select or de-select one or more teaching data items.
  • Use the sub-accounts, search box or type filter to filter the teaching data items displayed, if applicable.
  • NB you can only select one or many of the same type of teaching data items e.g. Teaching Units or Programmes etc.

If applicable, you can de-select all of the teaching data items within the course, in order to be able to select teaching data items of another type (e.g. Teaching Units rather than Programme Strands)

  1. Click Save Teaching Data Items.
