Embedding a JISC Online Survey in Canvas
This page shows the recommended method for linking to and embedding a JISC Online Survey within Canvas. If you have not yet created an account or used JISC Online Surveys yet there is information on how to create an account on the IT Services website.
Note: Use the Export Members tool from your Canvas course homepage in order to export a CSV file of all the students for import into your JISC Online Survey.
Be aware the anonymity of the users who complete the survey may be compromised if you import a list of students to the JISC Online Survey. You need to manage internal processes to maintain anonymity of the participants of the survey from people who analyse the survey outputs. To absolutely ensure anonymity you need to not import the list of respondents to the JISC Online Survey. However, it is then possible for individuals to complete the survey multiple times.
- Create your survey using the JISC Online Surveys system as normal. Guidance on how to create a survey using this system Links to an external site. is available on the JISC website. Make sure that you have "launched" your survey.
- Within JISC Online Surveys, go to the Distribute tab and check that the Survey Status is set to Open. Copy the Public URL for your survey.
- Navigate to the course and module in Canvas where you would like to add the survey, click the plus button to add a resource.
- Choose External URL from the dropdown list.
- Paste the Public URL for your survey that you copied from JISC Online Surveys into the URL field and enter the title for your survey in the Page Name field.
- Click the blue Add Item button.
- You can now drag the survey to the position in the module that you would like it, and click the publish icon to the right to make the survey visible to students. You need to also ensure that the module the survey is contained within is published to students.
Use the Student View button at the top right to confirm that students can see the link to the survey as expected. - Confirm by clicking the link that the survey loads within Canvas as expected.
