Access to Canvas and courses within Canvas
This page details gaining access to Canvas and courses within Canvas.
Access to Canvas
Most staff and students have automatic access to Canvas through their SSO login details, but due to GDPR requirements, we have not provisioned staff whom we expect will never have a need to use Canvas. However, we know that in Oxford there are bound to be exceptions, so if you cannot login to canvas with your SSO, and have a reason to do so, please email canvas@it.ox.ac.uk and we can discuss your requirements.
Access to courses in Canvas
Access to Canvas does not automatically mean you have access to any courses – this is controlled either by being enrolled in specific courses, or by being granted a sub-account role (which gives you access to larger sets of courses). Due to the complexity of Oxford, the latter is usually controlled at the departmental or college level by Local Canvas Coordinators (LCCs) and Unit Administrators who understand local requirements and can make sure you are assigned the appropriate access and permissions.
If you do not have the access or permissions you need, please contact your LCC in the first instance. If you do not know who your LCC is, please check this list: Who is my Local Canvas Coordinator?
Roles and permissions
Different roles (e.g. teacher, course administrator, teaching assistant, student) come with default permissions which control what you can do once you access a course. Depending on how you work with courses, and the frequency and number of courses you need to access, the best type of enrolment for you may vary. You may even use a combination of multiple types of enrolments to achieve the best result for your needs.
Note: The type of enrolment you have on a course also controls which notifications you will receive. You can familiarise yourself with the roles available at Oxford by reading the Roles and permissions page; and your Local Canvas Coordinator should be able to suggest what might work best for you.
