Students can't see a course

Q. Why can't students see my course in Canvas?

A. If your students cannot see your course, it could be that the course has not been published or was unpublished accidentally.

  • You must publish a course before students can access it and its contents. Students cannot see unpublished courses and content.
  • Publishing a course is a course permission. If you cannot publish your course, your institution has restricted this feature for your role. Contact your LCC for permission.
  • Publishing your course will send invitations to any users who were manually enrolled using the People tool. Users who were added via automatic data provisioning – such as the Group Enrolment Tool (GET) – will not receive an invitation.
  • Course invitations will not be sent until after the course start date. (The start date is commonly the term date, unless the term is being overridden by specific dates in Settings). In the latter case, you must tick the box under the new dates 'Students may only participate...'

To publish a course, select the Publish button on the top right of the Home Page.

Q. Why has my course disappeared off my Dashboard (and also for students)?

A. Canvas courses have an attached 'Term', which may be, for example, '2022-23 Academic year' or '2022-23 Entry' (see our page on Term dates in Canvas). When this 'term' has expired (especially for teaching courses, which are year based), the course card moves into a lower portion of the Dashboard, under Past Enrolments. Students and teachers can still access the past course, as it was at the time it was offered (which is a requirement of University policy). Courses under Past Enrolments have their content accessible, but as expected, no activites or interactions are possible.
