Q. Can a teacher embed resources, such as pre-built simulations, teaching cases etc into a Canvas course?

A. Yes, these can be embedded into Canvas pages and modules by using the HTML Editor and linking to the object. The object needs to be uploaded to the course Files area, either in advance or on the fly.

Q. Can the Canvas interface be presented in languages other than English?

A. Yes, there is a setting to select one of a number of modern languages, which will then render the entire Canvas interface in that language.

Q. Can one enter ASCII characters, e.g. for special characters in old languages (likewise for special characters and accented letters in modern languages)?

A. Yes, when editing a page using the rich content editor, type the special characters via keyboard shortcuts (e.g. ALT 0233 for é). Alternatively, use an external web editor that creates the special characters via a virtual keyboard (e.g. http://www.typeit.org/ Links to an external site.) and then paste them into the editing box in Canvas.

Q. Can I embed special fonts in a document (e.g. foreign language characters), to be sure that everyone who accesses the document sees them correctly?

A. If you have the correct fonts installed on your computer (and you can see the text exactly as it should be) then you can force MS Word to embed the fonts in the document so that any reader will see the correct fonts.  Here's a page which explains what to do: How to embed fonts in documents or presentations Links to an external site..

Then if you create a PDF using 'Save as PDF', it will also have the correct fonts embedded.

Q. How will Canvas handle student essay submissions that might be a mixture of languages, e.g. English and Ancient Greek?

A. Files submitted by students will be accepted ‘as is’ in Canvas… in other words, Canvas does not scan or modify the content of files submitted or uploaded.

Tutors and Course Administrators can set what types of files student may submit, e.g. PDF, Word, MP4, etc. (under 'Submission type').
