Note: The Canvas Assignments tool may be used only for formative assessment, not summative assessment. The University has selected the  Inspera platform to deliver both online (open-book) exams and online coursework submissions.

  • 'Summative' assessments cover a large variety of assessment methods and are defined as work that contributes to the progression on/or final outcome of a student’s degree course; and they require formal entry. Summative assessments are not restricted to essays and dissertations, but include items such as practical work writeups and class participation work. Whilst these latter types may be made up of smaller elements and may only receive a pass/fail mark on a student’s transcript, they are still summative items of work and at no point should they be submitted through Canvas.
  • 'Formative' assessment refers to informal student activities (such as an essay or a quiz) that provide feedback and support to enable the student to improve their learning before they take a summative assessment.
