Canvas New Quizzes

New Quizzes is a new, optional version of the Canvas quiz tool that offers additional features, including a variety of new question types. Further details are provided below.
See our additional guidance page which provides a comparison between New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes.

Notes:

  • New Quizzes is still under development. Although it offers some new functionality, it does not yet match all the existing functionality offered by Classic Quizzes. Therefore careful consideration is required before you embark on using New Quizzes.
  • The New Quizzes tool may be selected in any Canvas course (see section 2 below). Any Local Canvas Coordinator (or Unit Administrator) may revert this setting at the sub-account level, which would require individual users to purposefully enable the feature per course, if desired.

1. What does New Quizzes offer?

See the supplier's feature comparison between the two tools: New Quizzes vs Classic Quizzes.

Some of the new features include a greater variety of question types like stimulus, hotspot, categorisation, matching, and ordering questions. New Quizzes also has more moderation and accommodation features.

2. How to select the New Quizzes tool in your Canvas course

Go to the Quiz tool on the course navigation menu.

Click +Quiz to create a new quiz. You will be presented with the option of using Classic Quizzes or New Quizzes:

If you wish to use New Quizzes, select that option.

We recommend that you do not opt for the system to remember your choice, so that you will continue to be prompted each time you add a quiz as to which quiz engine to use.

Click the Submit button and build your new quiz.

3. How to build and manage a quiz

  • Go to the Quizzes tool on the left-hand course menu and elect to add a new quiz: add_quiz.jpg
  • On the Build tab, enter a title and instructions for the new quiz.
  • Then select the blue + button to create new questions, or use the Item Banks option to import questions from an existing question bank (if you have one):

To exit New Quizzes and return to your course, click the Return button at the top right:

  • Later, if you need to edit the quiz specifications (for example, change the availability dates or assign the quiz to a Section), click on the quiz title.
  • After editing the details, you can Cancel, Save, or click Build to build new quiz questions or edit existing ones:

The New Quizzes workflow includes a number of tabs along the top of the screen:

In particular, the Settings tab allows you to manage certain features, including the option to set multiple attempts at the quiz:

4. How to share item banks

In the New Quizzes tool, question banks (called item banks) can be shared with one or more people, granting either view only or edit permissions. This allows item bank editors to increase collaboration and disseminate quiz content in an account or across multiple courses.

Local Canvas Coordinators and Unit Admins can share item banks at the account level. If given editing permissions, all teachers, course administrators and TAs can edit an item bank that is shared with a course in which they are enrolled.

From a New Quiz: Build screen, click on the three-dots menu and select Manage Item Banks:

Then select the Share icon alongside the bank you wish to share:

You can share the bank with the entire institurion, or enter the user name(s) of the people with whom you wish to share the item bank. Select whether you want them to be able to view or edit the bank and click Add. When you have shared the bank with all necessary people, click Done.

5. Things to be aware of in New Quizzes

  1. Create a 'new quiz' from the Quizzes tool itself, rather than from the Modules layout.
  2. After working in the tool, you need to use the Return button (top right of the screen) to take you back to the Quizzes tool.
  3. There is no 'Questions' tab – in order to add questions, use the Build tab and click the blue "+" button.
  4. When selecting content to import a New Quiz into another course, New Quizzes appear in the drop-down list under Assignments  (should appear under Quiz).

Which quiz tool should I use? (See this feature comparison Links to an external site. by the Canvas suppliers)

  • If you need to use any of the question types that are only supported by New Quizzes use that, but be aware that you can't export the results as a CSV file or revert a New quiz to a Classic quiz.
  • If in doubt as to which quiz tool to use, then use Classic Quizzes. Reason: you can easily migrate a Classic Quiz into the New Quizzes tool, but not the other way around.
  • New Quizzes is planned to be the quiz tool of the future, as it is where development is being focused, but at least starting out in Classic Quizzes leaves your options open (for now).
