The Calendar
The global Calendar enables students to view upcoming assignment due dates and events for all their courses in one place. Events can be viewed by day, week, month, or agenda list.
To open your global calendar, click Calendar from the left-hand Global Navigation menu.
To open a particular course calendar, click into Home from the Course Navigation menu, then click View calendar on the right-hand side of your screen:
Note: Up to 20 individual course calendars can be displayed at any given time. These can be filtered by selecting or deselecting courses using the right-hand sidebar of the Calendar tool.

- To help manage multiple calendars, a user's 'favourited' courses will always be listed at the top of their calendar list. For more information about how to favourite a course, see item 2 on our page about How to find a course when it is not on my Dashboard.
Calendar capabilities
You can easily set events, assignments, and appointments within the Calendar. Once you set an event or assignment, it is immediately viewable by students in their own calendars.

1. Adding a Calendar Event in a Course Calendar
To add an event in your course Calendar:
- From the Course Navigation menu, click Home and then enter the calendar view by clicking View calendar on the top right-hand side.
- Now click on a date to add an event. Here you can add time, location and other additional details by filling in the fields of the Edit event window.
- You can create recurring events (including custom frequencies) by using the drop-down list alongside Frequency.
- More options expands to offer you the choice not only to add media to the event description, but also to use a different date for each section (if required).
- After completing the necessary edits, select Submit.
2. Adding an Assignment in a Course Calendar
To create an assignment in your course calendar:
- From the Course Navigation menu, click Home and then enter the calendar view by clicking View calendar on the top right-hand side.
- Now select the Assignment due date. When you click on the desired date, select the Assignment tab to create an assignment shell.
- You can now add details such as a Title and Due date. To add more granular details, click More options.
- If your assignment is ready to be shared, click Save and Publish. If you would like to edit the details at a later stage, click Save to keep the assignment shell as a placeholder.
Note: Remember to select the correct course Calendar for your event, or you may risk publishing an assignment to the wrong course.
3. Adding an Appointment Group in a Course Calendar
An Appointment Group enables tutors or lecturers to create time slots in their diary, which is particularly useful for activities such as feedback, viva voces and tutorials.
To create an Appointment Group in your Course Calendar:
1. From the Course Navigation menu, click Home and then enter the calendar view by clicking View calendar on the top right-hand side.
2. Now select the desired date, which will open an event shell.
3. Click on the fourth tab to the right, labelled Appointment Group.
3. You can now add details such as a Name, Location and Time range.
4. To automatically divide the time range into equal slots, place a number in the Divide in equal slots of [xx] minutes field. Click Go and your time slots will appear.
5. Once all your details have been added, click Publish. These appointment timeslots will now appear in the Course Calendar. Students can navigate there to reserve a slot.

- If you are delivering formative assessment activities through Canvas, use due dates to ensure that they are represented in the calendar (this will also add them into the To Do list which appears on the right-hand area of course Home page).
- The Calendar can be exported as a feed into other calendar applications such as Outlook.
- It is possible to add manual entries into the calendar for lectures, seminars, tutorials or other events.
