Student-generated videos

Part of your assessment strategy may be to ask students to plan and produce their own videos. Student-produced-videos is an excellent way to encourage creativity and deeper understanding of a topic.

All Canvas users have 'creator' rights in Panopto, even students. In the case of students, they can create content only in their personal Panopto folders, as well as Assignment folders.

Assignment folders (formerly known as 'drop box folders') are special subfolders of a Canvas course folder (within Panopto). Staff members (creators) can see and edit all content in an assignment folder. Students (viewers) can upload and view their own content in assignment folders, but cannot see content which they did not create.

Further information:
  • External students (who are enrolled in the Canvas course) have the same upload rights as students with Oxford SSOs.
  • The students need to download and install the Panopto manual recorder in order to create their video.
  • If students choose to use other video recording tools, they can simply upload their existing .mp4 files into their assignment folder in Canvas.
