Course tools: Canvas vs the former VLE WebLearn
There are certain WebLearn tools and features that do not map directly into Canvas; these are explained below.
WebLearn Surveys vs Canvas Quizzes
- Canvas does not offer a Surveys tool. You can build survey-type questions in the Quizzes tool. However, this does not have all the features of surveys in WebLearn. See more information how to build a survey in the Quizzes tool in Canvas. Links to an external site.
- You may want to consider using these alternative survey tools, and link to your survey from your Canvas course:
- Jisc surveys Links to an external site. (formerly Bristol Online Surveys - BOS), which is supported by IT Services. See our page: How to embed a Jisc survey in a Canvas course.
- Qualtrics Links to an external site. (if your department has a licence)
- Microsoft Forms Links to an external site. (part of Office 365).
WebLearn Sign-up vs Canvas Scheduler
- The sign-up tool equivalent in Canvas is Appointment Group (formerly called Scheduler).
- In most cases this will handle requirements for creating and booking time slots. Links to an external site.
- The central Canvas team has developed a customised sign-up tool for Canvas; within a Canvas course, use Settings > Navigation and enable Sign-up.
Summative Assessment
- University policy permits only formative assessment in Canvas, due to requirements regarding the secure management of examination papers.
- The alternative, approved platform for conducting summative examinations is Inspera, which has been rolled out across the University, for online exams and online coursework submissions.
Secure sharing of exam scripts
- Specially secure WebLearn sites used to exist, to allow examiners to share draft examination papers prior to an exam.
- This functionality is provided by Sharepoint. Please contact e-assessmentproject@it.ox.ac.uk ifyou have any questions.
Note: WebLearn was decommissioned at the end of 2022. It may still be accessed as an archive, but for security reasons, the University of Oxford VPN connection is required.
