Panopto - moving recordings between folders
There are two reasons why you may need to move existing recordings between Panopto folders:
- You may have recorded videos in your personal My Panopto folder (as a temporary 'holding' area), and – when you are happy with them – need to move them into a Canvas course for students to access.
- You have rolled over an existing Canvas course for the new academic year and need to copy its videos to the corresponding Panopto folder for the new course (so that they will be visible to students in the Panopto Recordings tool in the new course).
Note that each user has only one account in Panopto that contains all your recordings, located in various different folders which correspond to individual Canvas containers.

Things to think about:
Making Panopto recordings available on the course navigation menu (as shown below) will give students access to all recordings in the entire Panopto folder. Check with your course administrator as to whether or not it is advisable to do so. Alternative approaches include:
- Embed existing Panopto recordings within Canvas pages and release the pages on a week-by-week basis
- Simply record a particular session directly into a Canvas page using the plug-in option within the rich content editor
1. Enable the Panopto Recordings tool in the destination Canvas course
- Log in to Canvas and access the Canvas course in which you wish to make the recordings available to students.
- Use Settings > Navigation and enable the tool Panopto Recordings, which will now appear on the course navigation menu.
- Click on Panopto Recordings on the left menu to see the Panopto interface for this course. This step is necessary in order to set up the one-to-one correspondence between the destination Canvas course and its corresponding folder in Panopto.
2. Find the recording you wish to move
If you have recordings in another folder on Panopto (in the original Canvas course, or your My Panopto Folder), follow the steps below to select and move them.
- Go to the original Canvas course.
- Enable the Panopto Recordings tool (via Settings > Navigation), if not already enabled.
- Click on Panopto Recordings. You should see all the existing recordings.
- Use the dropdown box and select 'Everything'... this will show all your folders in Panopto that contain all recordings that you own (from all your Canvas courses).
3. Move the recording into the destination Canvas course folder
- Pop the Panopto interface open in a new tab (see small red box in image above). This will enable you to select a particular recording, which in turn displays the Copy and Move options.
- Move the mouse over the required recording and select it by ticking in the top left-hand box. (See screenshot below.)
- Note: you may select multiple recordings by ticking in each box.
- The function buttons will appear in the toolbar above. Select Copy or Move. (Copy is recommended if your original course needs to still be available to students for future reference under their Past Enrolments.)
- Search for the destination Canvas course folder, select it and click on Copy (or Move).
- The recording will then be in the respective Canvas course folder, for students to access.
Access your personal 'My Panopto' folder
- Previously it was possible to access this private folder via Canvas by selecting Account and clicking My Panopto Folder. This link has now been removed, to encourage users to make and save recordings in the Canvas course space that they are associated with, rather than having to move recordings (when ready for student viewing) from the private My Panopto Folder.
- My Panopto Folder can still be accessed directly via https://ox.cloud.panopto.eu
Links to an external site. which will prompt you to log in via Canvas. This may be useful for practising, editing and refining recordings. You will need to move the recordings (when ready) to the respective Canvas course folder (as explained above).
Notes:
- You must first visit the destination Canvas course, enable the Panopto Recordings tool and click on it at least once (see point 1 above). This will automatically create the corresponding folder in Panopto.
- From your Canvas Account, you must pop Panopto out into a new tab, otherwise you won't see the video selection box which enables the 'Copy', 'Move' and other functions.
