Vevox is a third-party polling app that is integrated in both Canvas and Microsoft Teams. Consider using a poll to enhance student interaction and gather feedback. Polls are enabled via a link which can be easily accessed from any type of device.

Asynchronous polls: enable a poll in Canvas and leave it open for a suitable length of time to gather student suggestions or ideas.
Synchronous polls: use a poll during a live session (either face-to-face or remotely in an MS Teams channel) as an icebreaker or to pose a quick question to test student understanding of a particular concept. An interesting question type is a 'word cloud' - students respond to a question and their responses are automatically displayed as a word cloud.

Important Note:

The data protection impact assessment (DPIA) indicates that Vevox is not a suitable platform for dealing with any data that may be confidential. As for all electronic systems, confidential data should be handled with care, according to GDPR regulations.

In order to use Vevox, you first need to request a Vevox account:

You will then receive an email from hello@vevox.com, with a link to complete the sign-up procedure and verify your email address.
Please do NOT try to set up an account via the Vevox website.

The Centre for Teaching and Learning website provides an overview of Vevox, including a list of some of the benefits of using polling in teaching and learning:

Help students participate and focus in lectures.
Give all students a voice. Even in large lecture theatres, audience response encourages everyone to participate and contribute. It can give those who might otherwise feel too intimidated a chance to get involved (Farrow, 2017).
Instantly identify any gaps in your students' knowledge and track how their understanding changes during a lecture or over a whole course. You could even use it to collect feedback on your lecture.

Enabling Vevox in a Teams channel

You can use Vevox via a Microsoft Teams channel. You will need to request a Team if you don't already have one: MS Teams getting started.

Enabling Vevox in a Teams meeting

You can now also enable a Vevox poll during a Teams meeting, to allow participants to vote in a poll without going to their mobile device. As the poll organiser, you need to set up the poll on the Vevox website first and then enable it during the Teams meeting. After participants have voted, close the poll in Vevox, and then the results will show automatically in the Teams meeting:

Known issues in MS Teams: (The Vevox providers are currently addressing these.)

MAC platform: Disabled buttons are not greyed out when participants submit their vote in the MS Teams app.
iOS operating system: Vevox doesn't open within Teams by default.
When presenting a word cloud type of poll, while participants can submit words, only a blank screen is displayed when the poll closes, instead of the word cloud.

Powerpoint Plugin for Mac OS:

There is no planned development for a Vevox plug-in for Powerpoint (Keynote) on the Mac operating system. Vevox is working on the assumption that soon all Office tools will be accessed online via Microsoft Office 365, therefore making redundant the need to install different plug-ins on your machine.

Enabling Vevox in your Canvas course

On the course navigation menu, go to Settings > Navigation. You will see two Vevox tools: your Vevox Dashboard, and the Vevox poll tool itself. Enable the latter so that it will be visible to students on the course navigation menu:

Use your Vevox Dashboard (visible only to you) to access vevox.com and create your poll.
Students will access the poll from the Vevox tool that is visible to them on the course menu.
Alternatively, you can create a link to a Vevox poll from within a Module by adding an 'external tool' and selecting the Vevox Webapp :

When students click on the link, they will be prompted to enter the poll ID, after which they can complete the poll:

Vevox functionality: Please note that a particular Vevox poll may contain only one question, and in Canvas only one Vevox poll may be open at any one time.

Surveys:

Although there is a survey option in Vevox, the recommended survey tool is Jisc Online Surveys (formerly Bristol Online Surveys).
