Recording of lectures and other teaching and learning activities by students
Biochemistry lectures are recorded and provided to students via Panopto Recordings in Canvas. The policy surrounding their use is detailed in the above policy and in the Panopto End User Licence Download Panopto End User Licence
The Oxford Students webpages provides guidance on how to get the most out of recorded lectures.
Additional routine recording of lectures and other teaching and learning activities (such as classes, practicals, etc) is not a good idea or to be encouraged (unless students have a genuine need and appropriate dispensation to do so) for a number of reasons:
- recording without permission is disrespectful to the person who has worked to prepare and deliver the teaching material;
- distribution of recordings may infringe the intellectual property rights of the person delivering the material;
- recording constitutes poor academic practice if it replaces note taking, as proper note taking involves thinking about the material as it is being delivered and making notes that both reflect the individual’s degree of understanding and are selective, covering points that the individual will find useful later.
The University policy on recording of lectures can be found at the link above. In brief, any student who wants to record a lecture (unless they have been given a dispensation to do so) must get written permission, usually by e-mail, from the lecturer in advance.
