It is possible to change your name and/or email address in Canvas.

If you have an Oxford Single Sign-On (SSO) username, you will need to complete a form so that the change can be done centrally and will filter through to all Oxford systems.
If you are an Oxford Applicant, you will need to change your name/email in the appropriate application system.
If you have an external (non-Oxford) account in Canvas, you will be taken to a page that allows you to change your name and/or the email address that you use to log in to Canvas.

All these functions are accessed via the Change Name/Email tool in your Account tab in Canvas.

To change your name or email address in Canvas, please go to the Change Name/Email tool, which is available from the Account tab. You will be redirected, depending on what type of account you have.

1. I have an Oxford Single Sign-On account

You will be redirected to complete a form to change your 'display name' and/or email address on Oxford central systems.

The form asks you to identify your account with a combination of account name, email address and/or current display name. It then allows you to change your display name and/or email address. Important: you must specify that you wish to change your name on Canvas in the "Additional Information" box.

Note:

Even if you change your preferred name in eVision (via the Student Gateway), it will not filter through to Canvas. The change needs to be done via the service request as described above.
In busy periods, it can take several days for the change(s) to update in Canvas.

2. I have an Oxford Applicant account

You will be redirected to the appropriate application system where you can update your details. Your details will then filter through to Canvas and other systems that use your Applicant details. Please allow some time for this to happen.

3. I have an external (non-Oxford) account in Canvas

The tool presents a form for you to complete:

Use the Reset button to set the fields back to their original values.
Use the Submit button to submit your changes. If this is disabled, then you have either not made any changes, or there is a problem with one or more of the values you have entered. You should see a message explaining the problem.
After submitting, you will see messages confirming which values have been updated, or if any problems occurred.
- If you have changed your name, this change will not be reflected in the name at the top of the tool or in the Account menu until your refresh the page or navigate to another page.

Verified Canvas email addresses:

You can only change your login email to another verified email address that is already associated with your Canvas account. You can add an alternative email address to your account in your Account Settings.

If the Login Email dropdown list is disabled, this is because you do not have any verified alternative email addresses associated with your account.
If you have added an email address but it is still not showing in the Login Email dropdown list, it may not be verified. Please see the Canvas guide on adding an email address as a contact method for more information.
If an email address is disabled within the Login Email dropdown list, this means that it is already being used as a login email address for a Canvas account. This could be either the account that you are logged in with (a Canvas account can have more than one login email address), or a different account.

Note:

Changing your login email will not do the following:

Change the email notifications you receive from Canvas. You need to change your preferences in your Account Notification Settings.
Change your ‘default’ email address in Canvas. This is the email address that is visible to people with permission to view email addresses and that is sent to certain external tools. Your default email address can be changed in your Account Settings . Please see the Canvas guide on changing your default email address for more information.
