As a new student you should...

Register online using the Student Self Service system, ensuring that the contact details you provide, including your primary email address, are up to date. If your contact details change during your course, you should update them.
Familiarise yourself with the set up of your supervisory team. At least two provisional supervisors will have been appointed for you before you arrived and their names should have been given to you by your department. You should arrange to meet your supervisors as soon as possible after arriving in Oxford, as they are your primary source of information and guidance. Please inform the Graduate School Assistants (GSAs) if you have not yet received the name of your provisional supervisor.
Work with your supervisor to complete a Training Needs Analysis - it is compulsory for students to complete a Training Needs Analysis in their first term.
Familiarise yourself with the Examination Regulations which contain the ‘laws’ governing your course.
Read the Policy on Research Degrees which include the details of the responsibilities of the student and of the supervisors and other important information
Read the information on Academic Integrity which includes reference to plagiarism
Read the leaflet on Research Integrity and the information provided about University policy and guidance in the core areas of the responsible conduct of research
Read the University Student Handbook provided by the Proctors' Office
Read the list of the information which should be made available to you when you start

Medical Sciences Graduate School Welcome Event 2021

Students often find it useful to make contact with others in similar fields. The Graduate School Welcome Event will take place on Thursday 7 October 2021, probably via Teams and Teams Live.

Other important points to note

Graduate Progression Forms. At various points in your postgraduate student career, you will need to complete Graduate Progressions Forms. For example, when you apply for transfer of status and, for DPhil students, confirmation of status. There are a number of guides for you to read and forms for you to complete when you come to apply for appointment of examiners
Graduate Supervision Reporting. You can report on your progress using Graduate Supervision Reporting within Student Self Service throughout your programme of study.
Skills Training. The Medical Sciences Graduate School offers a comprehensive range of Skills Training Programmes which supplement departmental training and provide additional networking opportunities. You will be expected, during your first term, and throughout the course of your studies, to review your training needs, plan a training timetable and develop your CV. As a student registered in the Medical Sciences Graduate School, you may attend these programmes free of charge (although you will need to pay a small refundable deposit to secure your place on a training course).
University Card. Your University Card will allow you to access the Bodleian Library. You should also register with your departmental and college library as appropriate. New clinical students should register as readers at the Cairns Library, Level 3, JR Hospital. A leaflet on Oxford Libraries and the method of registration should have been issued to you by your college. You may also contact your College's Senior Tutor or Tutor for Graduates to obtain the leaflet.
Enrolment certificate. In order to open a bank account or get exemption from council tax, you may require an enrolment certificate. An enrolment certificate confirming your enrolled status at the University of Oxford for the current academic year is available to print from Student Self Service once your University registration is complete. Instructions on how to generate the certificate are available on that page.
Record retention. Academic records of all students registered for higher degrees of the University are maintained on the University's student database. Each new record is opened on registration and all records are continually updated as students progress. The University also keeps individual correspondence files on current students, on which are retained copies of all applications and related correspondence and other relevant documentation.
Public lectures. A list of public University lectures open to all can be found online.
