Manage Courses – Delete (and restore) courses

The Manage Courses tool enables Local Canvas Coordinators (LCCs) or Unit Adminstrators to delete a Canvas course; the central Canvas team is able to restore a deleted course on request, if required.

To delete a course:

  1. Access the Manage Courses tool from your Admin menu.
  2. Search for the required course.
  3. Click on the Delete option within the three-dot menu.
  4. Click on the Yes, delete the course button in the validation window that pops up.

Note: NB there are ‘controls’ relating to the ability to delete courses. It is not possible to delete a course if it is:

  • More than 120 days old; or
  • Is published; or
  • Has been rolled over.

If you need to delete such a course, please contact your learning technologist via canvas@it.ox.ac.uk.

To restore a course (central Canvas team only):

If the course has been deleted mistakenly, please send a message to canvas@it.ox.ac.uk (providing the course URL) and ask for it to be restored.

Learning technologists have the permissions to restore a deleted course, according to the following steps (NB: to restore a course you can start at step 8 below, if you know the course ID):
