Adding users to past courses
When a Canvas course has been completed (and appears under Past Enrolments), it is dormant and cannot be edited. The + People button is greyed out and new users cannot be enrolled in the usual way in such a course.
If the Oxford Groups tool is not visible on the left-hand menu, you can access it from the People tool:
Step 1: Create an Ad-hoc group using the Oxford Groups tool
The first step is to create an Ad-hoc group of the required users, so that they can be enrolled in the past course(s).
Step 2: Create a rule to enrol that group in one or more Canvas courses
The second step is to create a rule in the Oxford Groups tool to enrol the new users in the past course(s).
For both steps, please refer to our page about creating an Ad-hoc group and a rule.
- You can reuse any Ad-Hoc groups you have created and add more users to them in the future; the rule will then automatically apply and add them to the respective course(s).
- As this is a past enrolment, the course will appear in the users' Courses>All Courses>Past enrolments section in Canvas.
- The above steps may be done by teachers at the individual course level, or by Local Canvas Coordinators (or Unit Admins) at the sub-account level for several courses at once.
Note:
- You first need to create an Ad-Hoc Group (step 1 above) before you can create a 'rule' to enrol that group in one or more Canvas courses (step 2 above).
- No invite will be sent to inform the user that they have been added.
