For Admins: Manage Question Banks

Question Banks are a group of questions that can be imported into any quiz in Canvas. Account level question banks can be used to create institutional or departmental question banks.

1. Creating question banks as an LCC or Unit Admin

 

1. Select Admin from the Global Navigation Menu.

2. Select Question Banks from the Navigation Menu.

3. To create a new Question Bank click the + Add Question Bank button on the top right-hand side of the screen.

4. Enter a name for the Question Bank in the Bank Name field.

5. To save the Question Bank name select return or enter.

6. The question bank will be automatically bookmarked, to view all bookmarks select View Bookmarked Banks in the top right hand corner.

7. To open a Question Bank click the Question Bank Name.


 

2. Adding a new question

 

1. To add questions select the + Add a question on the top right hand side of the screen.

2. Select the question type in the drop down menu e.g. Multiple choice. 

 

3. Then add your question and other content into the Rich Content Editor or HTML Editor window.

 

4. Then add your multiple answers in the fields shown below.

 

5. To add comments to the answer select the three dots below each answer, add you comment and select Done. The comment will only be displayed once the quiz is submitted.

6. To save the question to select Update Question.

Note: You cannot import questions outside of Canvas into the Question Bank.


 

3. Editing bank details

To change the name of the Question Bank select the Edit Bank Details button on the right hand side of the screen.


 

4. Moving multiple questions

 

1. To move multiple questions between banks select the Move Multiple questions button.

Note: This will move the question and will not leave a copy in the original Question Bank. Use the move/copy question to another bank hyperlink to copy a question (see next section).

2. Select the question you want to move.

3. Select the Question Bank you want to move it to.

4. Click Move questions button.


 

5. Moving/copying questions to another bank

 

1. To allow you to copy a question between banks select the move/copy question to another bank hyperlink.

 

2. The Move/Copy Questions box will appear.

3. Select the question bank you want to copy it to.

4. Tick Keep a copy in this question bank as well and click Move/Copy Questions button.


 

6. Sharing a Question (Item) Bank

In the New Quizzes tool, question banks (called item banks) can be shared with the entire account, as well as with one or more courses, with either view only or edit permissions. This allows question bank editors to increase collaboration and disseminate quiz content in an account or across multiple courses.

Only Admins can manage access for question banks shared at the account level. If given editing permissions, all teachers, course administrators and TAs can edit a question bank that is shared with a course in which they are enrolled.

From a New Quiz: Build screen, click on the three-dots menu and select Manage Item Banks:

 

Then select the Share icon alongside the bank you wish to share:

You can share the bank with the entire institurion, or enter the user name(s) of the people with whom you wish to share the item bank. Select whether you want them to be able to view or edit the bank and click Add. When you have shared the bank with all necessary people, click Done.


 

7. Deleting a Question Bank

When you are within a Question Bank, you can delete it by clicking on the X Delete Bank button on the top right hand side of the screen.


 

8. Adding a Quiz to a Module

 

1. Select the + button against the module where you would like to add the quiz.

 

2. Select Quiz in the drop down list.

 

3. Highlight New Quiz if the quiz does not exist, and give it a name and select Add Item or if it exists select the appropriate quiz from the list followed by Add Item.

 

4. Select the Quiz created that now appears in the Module.

5. Select Edit

6. To find your Question Bank button select the Questions tab

7. Then select the Find Questions Button.

8. You will see a list of Question Banks including course and account level question banks (if they exist). 

9. Click the name of your question bank.

Account-level Question Banks are available to all courses in the sub-account; whereas course-level Question Banks are only available to the particular course.

10. Check the box against the question you created earlier.

 

11. If you want to select all the questions together use the select all link on each Question Bank.

Question groups allow you to place multiple questions within a group for students to answer. You can choose the number of questions that should be answered from the group and how many points to assign each question. Creating a question group randomizes questions within a quiz.

12. To add the questions to a different Question Group, click the drop down list and add a group name, pick the number of questions in the group and amount of points per question.

13. Select Add questions

14. When complete select Save & Publish or just Save if already published

15. The questions will be added to your quiz.
